Understanding Neurodivergence: Inside and Out

By Jaimie Hutchison, MA, LPC, Team Hutch Counseling

ree

For over 18 years, I’ve supported adolescents and adults who identify as neurodivergent—through individual therapy, group support, school counseling, and community-based programs. And I don’t just understand neurodivergence professionally—I live it, too.

As someone who is neurodivergent myself, I know what it’s like to move through the world with a brain that processes, feels, and reacts differently than what’s considered “typical.”

Whether it's ADHD, autism, PTSD, or a combination of these, neurodivergence can show up in unique and often misunderstood ways.

You might experience:

  • Sensory sensitivity or overload

  • Emotional regulation challenges

  • Difficulty focusing or sitting still

  • Social exhaustion or masking in groups

  • A need for structure—or a deep resistance to it

  • A deep sense of loneliness, especially when others don’t seem to “get” how your mind works

And while these challenges are real and valid, they are only part of the story. Neurodivergent people are also often intuitive, creative, observant, passionate, and deeply resilient. In therapy, we don’t just focus on what’s hard—we identify what’s working, and build on it. We explore how to use your strengths to navigate daily life more effectively, and we develop tools to manage stress, overwhelm, and burnout in a way that actually works for your brain.

My approach is trauma-informed, affirming, and flexible. I understand that one-size-fits-all solutions often don’t fit at all. Together, we’ll work to:

  • Make sense of your patterns

  • Explore the impact of your experiences

  • Reduce shame and self-doubt

  • Find ways to support your goals, communication, and wellbeing

  • Celebrate what makes your brain powerful, not just different

Whether you’ve recently started exploring a diagnosis or have been navigating neurodivergence your whole life, you deserve support that honors who you are.

If you're looking for a therapist who will meet you with understanding, patience, and practical support—I'm here.
