What is Trauma-Informed Care — and Why It Matters

Updated: Jul 1

ree

At Team Hutch Counseling, I specialize in trauma-informed therapy in Michigan, offering virtual support to adults, women, caregivers, and young people navigating life’s challenges — including trauma, anxiety, and the emotional impact of cancer. But what exactly is trauma-informed care — and why does it matter?

Understanding Trauma-Informed Care

Trauma-informed care recognizes that past experiences — such as abuse, loss, medical trauma, discrimination, or chronic stress — shape how we feel, relate, and cope. Rather than asking “What’s wrong with you?” this approach gently asks “What happened to you?” and honors each person’s story with compassion and respect.

I was first trained in trauma-informed care early in my career while working with individuals in crisis and those who had experienced significant trauma. Since then, I have continued to deepen my understanding through ongoing training, practice, and meaningful engagement with the communities I serve.

Why Trauma-Informed Care Matters

Whether you’re living with anxiety, supporting a loved one through cancer, or balancing caregiving and work responsibilities, trauma-informed care offers a space where healing can begin. It focuses on five key principles:

  • Safety – emotional and physical

  • Trustworthiness – consistent and transparent care

  • Choice – honoring autonomy

  • Collaboration – working side-by-side

  • Empowerment – focusing on strengths

In a trauma-informed setting, clients are not just heard — they are truly understood.

Virtual Trauma-Informed Counseling in Michigan

Through secure telehealth sessions, I provide individual counseling and group counseling for:

  • Women and adults navigating life transitions, relationships, or the emotional effects of cancer

  • Caregivers supporting children, aging parents, or loved ones with chronic illness

  • Cancer survivors and family members adjusting to diagnosis, treatment, or survivorship

  • Teens and young adults, including college students, facing anxiety, stress, or identity transitions

All services are rooted in trauma-informed, person-centered care — because your experiences matter and your healing is valid.
